Krásná hora Winery Doubles Their Vineyards (more brilliant wines to come!)

We could all use a little good news nowadays. So what if I said that you soon will see even more brilliant wines from our beloved Krásná hora family? That surely puts a smile on our faces!

For those who need a refresher, the Krásná hora family winery is located in the heart of Moravia, the largest wine region in the Czech Republic. Located in the southeast region of the country, Moravia borders Austria and a bit of Slovakia and sits on the 49th parallel which puts it on a similar latitude as renowned regions such as Alsace. You can read more about the region here.

The new vineyards recently acquired by the family are located just 10 min from the winery. Between Novy Poddvorov, Prusanky, and Moravsky Zizkov, the land is just southwest of the winery and on one of the higher points around. The new vineyards add just over 7 hectares of land bringing their total vineyards managed to around 15 hectares.

A quick tour of the new vineyards!

A small forest protects one plot, and there is an enclosed area so the family can finally bring their own animals into the vineyards. We’re told hens will be first, along with building houses for the native birds that live in the forest. Soon, however, there will be sheep grazing on the grass beneath the grapevines. This is just another example of the family’s commitment to the land and their dedication to keeping it as natural and healthy as possible. Sheep offer some of the best natural fertilizers, and integrating sheep in the vineyard system has long been recognized for its potential benefits to the soil and ecosystem.

Grazing vineyard sheep have also been known to help calm the anxious public via YouTube. Maybe we can convince Marek and Ondřej to install cameras and stream video so we can all find some calm and enjoy their new sheep. :-)

So what will this new land produce for us? I mean, sheep are great, but we’re really in it for the wine, right?

The soil is similar to the original Krásná hora vineyards. The plants are roughly 16 years old and provide some of our favorite varietals. White grapes include Gewurztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and a Central European varietal, Irsai Oliver which will be used in the La Blanca blend. Perfect whites for their lineup!

And the reds are just as exciting. Traditional varietals of the region including Blaufrankisch, Blauer Portugieser, Dornfelder, and Saint Laurent. These grapes will provide new flavors and varietals to the KH lineup. We can’t wait to see how Ondřej makes these in his own style!

Cheers to the Krásná hora family for taking on double the vineyards, and committing to the dedication and work it will be to produce even more brilliant wines!
