The Truth About Czech Wines

I’m not sure if there is a preconceived idea about wines from the Czech Republic - or just no idea at all - but each time I pour a wine for someone, you can see it in their eyes. The skepticism. The hesitation.

But you want the truth? Once that wine is tasted, that look in their eye turns from skepticism to surprise and delight. We joke that we need to keep a camera around each time we pour a tasting because the look on people’s faces is priceless and never gets old.

Here are nine truths about Czech wines:

  • Czech Winemakers are producing some of the most interesting wines in the world right now that are winning awards across the globe.

  • Moravia is the wine region that resides in the southern part of the Czech Republic, bordering Austria and Slovakia.

  • You’ll love pouring these wines for people. The look of surprise & delight is priceless.

  • The rich history of Moravia provides a fairy-tale like background to the brilliant wines for people to experience a bit of wine-derlust.

  • Moravia is established in the natural wine scene with many winemakers following their roots of making wine with minimal intervention.

  • The blend of well-known international varietals like Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Merlot, Pinot Noir, with the local indigenous varietals such as Muller-Thurgau, Welschriesling, and Palava gives you something for everyone.

  • This “new old-world” region has been making wine since Marcus Aurelius and his legions battled during the Roman wars.

  • Very little is distributed in the US because few importers make the effort to access them, and many winemakers sell out in the country.

  • Moravia’s position on the 49th parallel puts it at the same latitude as renowned wine regions like Alsace and Champagne.

We’re not saying Czech Wine is going to be the “next big thing.” But we’re not saying it’s not, either. :-)
